Before they begin writing, most memoir authors think they know what their story will be about. It’s only when they dig in to what happened and how they truly felt that that they discover what their story is really about. These unexpected layers in your story can shift your relationship to yourself, your past, and even others in your life. This is the power of memoir—to decide what your past means to you. That’s why we focus on supporting the emotional journey of writing—and the courage required to take it on.
Many people write memoir to better understand themselves—and a secret motivation is to unravel judgments they hold about their past. Through writing your memoir, you witness yourself. In our coaching, we focus on helping you unearth details that let you see yourself clearly on the page—which is the first step to accepting yourself exactly as you are.
Most writing programs focus on the mechanics of storytelling—but we know the most compelling story inside you is your truth. When you can state your truth—your lived experience—simply and clearly, you won’t need to dress it up in artful craft (even though you can). But getting to your unvarnished truth can be hard. Defenses pop up to try to shield you from your knowing. We help you see them and go beyond them to embrace the power of your story.
